MAJOR FINDINGS SHIFT IN SAME-SEX WEDDINGS POST MARRIAGE EQUALITY More LGBTQ couples are now choosing to get married in their home states (77%) because they no longer need to travel to another state for legal marriage recognition. In the last year, there has been a substantial increase in same-sex couples (79%) celebrating their union with a ceremony and reception with invited guests. This is a large increase from 43% of same-sex weddings prior to 2013. Emotional support for same-sex couples from friends and family has increased in the last few years, but still lags behind the support given to opposite-sex couples. For example, support from parents of same-sex couples has increased from 46% to 60%, but compared to 86% for opposite-sex couples. Today, 68% of same-sex couples are choosing more "traditional proposals" where one person proposes to another, as opposed to in the past when more than half (52%) had a conversation and made a plan to have a city hall ceremony or elope to another state.
